How can I brighten up my kitchen?

The kitchen is the heart of the household, and you may find that your mood (and munching habits) are reflective of the space within. Making your kitchen lighter can also make a small space seem bigger. Avoid a dull and dreary kitchen forever with our tips for keeping your kitchen bright and light.

1.  Lighting

It may seem like a no-brainer, but it can be easy to forget how much good lighting can change the vibe of a room. LED lighting can create a wonderful daylight ambience, whilst warm LED lighting will enhance the homely glow of the kitchen.

In our Blog Lighting the way, Lara discusses Task lighting is ideal for illuminating areas as you use them, or for highlighting areas you would like to draw attention too; under-shelf lights prevent your beautiful aspects from being plunged into shade and can enhance the appearance of space.

2. White

Nothing will bring the light to kitchen faster than white; the colour bounces the light back into the room, creating the illusion of more space and light. White is the ideal colour to make a small kitchen look bigger, and it’s the perfect way to make a space appear more naturally airy. High gloss is the best reflective surface, but you can also explore how white fits into your personal aesthetic. You may find that whitewashing your kitchen is a little jarring if it isn’t sympathetic to the interior design of the rest of your house! Compare our Bredhurst kitchen to the Second Nature kitchen for examples of how white can draw light into a room in different ways.

3. Reflective Backsplash

Using coloured glass or high-gloss tiles is a perfect way to enhance the light and brighten up your kitchen. Under cabinet lights are particularly ideal for illuminating the backsplash. Having a bright splash of colour on your splashback can be the perfect centrepoint to a room, giving it a burst of life and joy. Bright accents are a great fix for a darker kitchen too; try matching your splashback to one or two other elements in your bathroom – a feature vase or ceramic can be perfect. Keep it simple, and avoid clutter for the best effect.

4. Storage, storage, storage

Make use of storage and keep countertops clear. Nothing clutters a space up faster than a kitchen littered with crockery and pans. Install a range of clever storage and fittings inside your kitchen units and keep your worktops clear, clean and spacious!
